JOB SUMMARY

The Director, Tax will report to the Controller and will have responsibility for directing the corporate tax function, including tax provisions, US federal and multistate compliance, premium taxes, and tax planning. The Director will work with partners across the Company, as well as externally, to support enterprise initiatives (e.g., transaction planning, system support, business requests, etc.) and to provide information to senior management.
 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct the design, implementation and management of tax accounting and reporting processes – including internal controls, related systems/applications, and account reconciliations.
  • Ensure that tax provisions, footnotes and other reporting conform to applicable GAAP and statutory requirements.
  • Provide tax forecasts and support in connection with Company’s financial and capital planning.
  • Direct the preparation and review of work papers to support the Company’s federal and state tax returns.
  • Oversee and serve as primary contact for all tax-related audits, which includes coordinating and managing timelines, requests and responses throughout an audit.
  • Ensure that federal and state tax returns and related payments are properly computed and submitted.
  • Prepare and review tax and accounting research and memoranda to support conclusions.
  • Support new business and department initiatives through participation or leadership of cross-functional teams, and management of enterprise projects.
  • Work effectively with outsider service providers on review and management of tax compliance, accounting and planning initiatives.
  • Provide leadership, support and development of direct reports, as well as the accounting staff.
  • Manage or direct other areas of finance, as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field (accounting, finance or economics) or equivalent work experience. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Master’s of Taxation, a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years of public company or public accounting experience. Mortgage insurance or financial services background or experience, strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of prior management experience.
  • Prior experience in corporate tax role with responsibility for tax compliance, accounting and tax planning support.
  • MS Excel, tax and accounting research tools, enterprise/general ledger (GL) systems, and tax compliance applications.
  • Experienced in evaluating and applying corporate tax concepts under GAAP and SSAP.
  • Advanced understanding of corporate tax principles and tax accounting guidance.
  • Prior budgeting experience is preferred.
  • Strategic planning abilities and critical thinking skills.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills and sound business judgment; self-starter able to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to proactively gather and synthesize data from internal and/or external sources, and to guide the analysis of complex issues.
  • Skill in written and verbal communication and in preparing effective presentations, with clear narrative and impactful graphics.
  • Ability to direct functional and company-wide initiatives.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with ability to direct financial processes and capacity to implement control procedures while driving continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and deliver on tight deadlines.
