JOB summary

The Quality Control Manager plans, coordinates and directs the National Mortgage Insurance (National MI) quality control audits covering loan origination, servicing/loss mitigation, and other designated functions; and manages a team of QC auditors. The Manager will supervise QC personnel and is responsible for the audit findings. The Manager must combine underwriting skills with written communication skills to ensure findings are accurate and described in a way that is appropriate for, and tailored to, the various entities audited (NMI underwriting management, NMI contract underwriting management, NMI delegated validation management, NMI non-delegated validation management, and underwriting management at lender customers (both for delegated full file audits and non-delegated closing package audits)). This position is located in Emeryville, California. Relocation assistance will not be provided.

ESSENTIAL job duties & responsibilities

  • Manages departmental processes and procedures and initiating modifications as necessary to consistently meeting established quality and productivity standards.
  • Provides leadership, direction, management and training to QC staff members.
  • Ensures audit findings are accurately and succinctly documented and clearly articulated, both in writing and verbally.
  • Reviews the work of auditors and reconciles feedback from audited entities (described above) regarding findings, including resolving disputed findings and discussing/explaining severe findings (that may include re-pricing or rescission) with customers.
  • Identifies quality trends and underlying causes leading to QC findings through random sampling and discretionary audits.
  • Communicates with internal stakeholders, NMI management, master policy holders, and other third parties (including auditors, GSES, re-insurers, etc.).
  • Advises and assists internal departments to determine when action plans are necessary, assists with development of those plans, and assesses the effectiveness of the plans.
  • Ensures the QC policy is aligned with stakeholder requirements (such as the GSEs’ PMIERs requirements) and that QC activities are carried out consistent with policy requirements.
  • Develops and maintains respect with all employees, management and customers.
  • Exercises personal initiative in organizing and completing tasks according to established product guidelines and team needs.
  • Maintains compliance with PMIERs requirements related to Quality Control reviews and reporting.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge and understanding of all policies and systems utilized to attain the accurate completion of all QC reports.
  • Problem solves by using judgment based upon knowledge of existing management policies and departmental practices and procedures.
  • Meets established productivity and task management standards.
  • Manages and leads subordinate staff.
  • Works collaboratively with the QC Analyst and the VP Credit Policy and QC
  • Facilitates a collaborative working relationship with Processors, Loan Consultants and Managers.

ESSENTIAL Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or the equivalent supplementary education and experience.
  • 10 or more years of combined professional experience in the mortgage lending industry (i.e. processing, underwriting, pricing, closing, servicing, collections, etc.).
  • 5 or more years in an underwriting or QC management role.
  • MI Risk experience preferred.
  • Experience leading and managing staff.
  • Ability to understand and interpret mortgage origination, servicing and loss mitigation policies.
  • Communication skills and customer service.
  • Precise attention to detail.
