POSITION SUMMARY
The Underwriter underwrites low-risk and standard risk mortgage insurance application files for acceptable risk in accordance with company and industry/investor guidelines. The Underwriter’s review and loan decision are based on a prudent and comprehensive credit risk assessment consistent with policy requirements. This position is remote however, the working hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (PST).
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Underwrite individual mortgage loan submissions within National MI , GSE, and established program approval guidelines. Productivity must meet department standards.
- Review, with a high degree of accuracy, loan scenario parameters, income and employment documentation, available assets, credit reports, AUS supported appraisal evaluation and full Appraisal and applicable ratios (i.e., Debt-to-income and Loan-to-value) to determine underwriting decision. Detailed analysis of tax returns, and financial statements will be required in standard Risk reviews and risk decisions.
- Evaluate/Examine transactions and loan data elements for accuracy and completeness.
- Reconcile documents to ensure they are consistent and adhere to company and investor/industry guidelines.
- Evaluate loan submissions to identify red flags using fraud detection techniques or refer to management as appropriate.
- Determine recommendations for counteroffers to facilitate renegotiation of loan structure within risk management guidelines.
- Communicate directly with Underwriting Manager/Director to gather information to make appropriate decisions.
- Document rationale with supporting comments behind credit risk decisions.
- Communicate timely and effectively with internal staff to maintain high level of customer service.
- Underwrite low-risk or standard risk loans within established company service level agreements including conditions or trailing documents.
- Communicate effectively with Customers, Sales Advisors, Solution Center Team, and other internal departments conveying accurate underwriting guideline and policy information in a timely manner.
- Perform ad hoc responsibilities, as needed.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
- High school diploma or equivalent, with college education preferred.
- Minimum of four years mortgage underwriting experience.
- Minimum of one year of remote underwriting experience.
- MI Risk experience preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to understand and interpret Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Prospector (LP) Findings.
- Ability to enforce credit policies while maintaining Lender relationships.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communications skills.
- Strong customer service skills and values.
- Maintains confidentiality of information and uses information appropriately.
- Team player with selfless attitude.
- Able to work independently, as well as in a team setting.
Base Salary Range: $67,800 - $86,400/year
