POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Underwriter underwrites simple to more complex mortgage insurance application files for acceptable risk in accordance with company and industry/investor guidelines. The Senior Underwriter’s review and loan decision are based on a prudent and comprehensive credit risk assessment consistent with policy requirements. This position is remote however, the working hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (PST).
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Underwrite individual mortgage loan submissions within National MI, GSE, and established program approval guidelines. Productivity must meet department standards.
- Accurately review financial statements, credit reports and applicable ratios (i.e., Debt-to-income and Loan-to-value) to make underwriting decisions.
- Evaluate/examine transactions to judge accuracy and completeness.
- Independently ensure documents are consistent and uphold to company and investor/industry guidelines.
- Evaluate loan submissions to identify red flags using fraud detection techniques or refer to management as appropriate.
- Perform compliance reviews as applicable.
- Recommend and facilitate renegotiation of loan structure based on lending guidelines.
- Communicate directly with the Underwriting Manager/Director to gather information to make appropriate decisions.
- Document rationale with comments behind credit risk decisions.
- Provide leadership, direction, or training to team members and communicate performance feedback to Manager when applicable.
- Communicate with internal staff to maintain a high level of customer service.
- Develop timely flow of underwriting files and condition sign off to facilitate company turn times.
- Communicate effectively with Customers, Sales Advisors, Solution Center and other internal departments conveying accurate underwriting guideline and policy information in a timely manner.
- Perform ad hoc responsibilities, as needed.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of six years of mortgage underwriting experience required.
- Minimum of one year of remote underwriting experience.
- MI Risk experience preferred.
- Ability to understand and interpret Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Prospector (LP) findings.
- Ability to enforce credit policies while maintaining Lender relationships.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communications skills.
- Strong customer service skills and values.
- Maintains confidentiality of information and uses information appropriately.
- May need National or State Licensing.
Base Salary Range: $79,700 - $101,600/year
