POSITION SUMMARY
The internship at National MI offers a valuable hands-on learning experience across several key aspects of corporate tax, including accounting for income and non-income taxes, federal and state tax compliance, tax law research and exposure to various aspects of the finance function. The intern will have the opportunity to directly apply classroom theories in a workplace setting, strengthening both their personal and professional skillsets. The intern will be mentored by, and have the opportunity to network with, experienced tax and finance professionals. The intern will deepen their understanding of the responsibilities of a corporate tax accountant, helping them make informed decisions about pursuing a career in corporate tax.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Tax Compliance: Supports the preparation and review of tax forms and workpapers for various income and insurance premium tax filings, including estimates, extensions, and annual returns.
- Tax Accounting: Prepares journal entries, maintains financial records, and prepares account analyses and reconciliations for various tax general ledger accounts.
- Reporting: Assists in the preparation of tax disclosures for financial statements and prepares supporting tie-outs.
- Research and Analysis: Conducts research on tax updates and provides insightful analysis through verbal communication and written documentation.
- Documentation: Assists in the documentation and organization of tax records for audit purposes.
- Software Utilization: Learns to utilize software and tools to help streamline processes and maintain accurate financial data.
- Performs ad-hoc responsibilities, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Pursuing a degree in accounting, finance, tax or related field.
- Must have completed a minimum of three accounting courses by December 2024.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel.
- Must possess attention to detail with excellent analytical skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proactive mindset with the ability to take ownership of tasks.
- Ability to work effectively within a team.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges in a dynamic corporate environment.
- Ability to perform job responsibilities within in a hybrid work model.
INTERNSHIP DETAILS
- The internship will take place from January – June 2025, with the possibility of extending into summer and fall.
- This is a part-time position (16 – 24 hours per week) during the academic year. Work dates and hours are flexible, based on the intern’s availability.
- The intern is expected to report to the National MI office in Emeryville, CA, at least one day per week, with remaining workdays completed remotely.
- The hourly rate for this position is $34.00.
